Symptom Categorization

After diving into the literature on probiotic studies for IBS, we noticed a wide range of measurements, symptom parameters, and tools used across various studies. This diversity in measurement approaches makes it challenging to compare results directly. To bring some order to this chaos, we’ve categorized the assessed parameters into ten broad categories described below. This categorization helps us draw more meaningful conclusions about the clinical utility of each probiotic. In some cases, parameters fell outside of these categories and were classified as “other symptoms.” For details on other symptoms, please refer to the study findings section under each probiotic summary. This structured approach allows us to better understand and compare the clinical benefits of different probiotics for IBS.

The following are parameters and symptoms we encountered in the literature, categorized into ten broad groups:

01
Diarrhea
  • Colonic transit time (if decreased)
  • Sense of urgency for defecation
  • Urgency
  • Evacuation score
  • IBS-D stool consistency
  • IBS-D decrease in complete spontaneous BMs
  • IBS-D decrease in spontaneous BMs
  • Stool frequency (when decreased in the setting of diarrhea)
  • Stool consistency (when stools are more firm/improved consistency in the setting of diarrhea)
